Most school buses in midwestern Ontario stayed off the roads for a second day as lake effect snow continues to cover the area.

The snow squalls arrived Wednesday night after an Alberta clipper, and are forecasted to bring another 20 to 40 centimetres from Thursday through Thursday night. Environment Canada has noted that snowfall amounts will vary significantly throughout the region.

The national weather agency has issued a yellow-level snow squall warning for Huron County, Perth County, northern Grey County, and southern Bruce County.

The combination of snow and wind gusts reaching up to 50 kilometres an hour will make some roads tough to drive on.

“The roads are snow covered, they are slick, they are slippery, and in some areas they are icy,” said OPP Sergeant Ed Sanchuk. “You are going to encounter some difficult driving conditions today, so if you can stay off the roads until this clears it might be the best thing for you.”

Drivers who must go out should remember to slow down and keep extra distance between vehicles.

All school buses in Huron-Perth and Grey-Bruce have been cancelled for the day, while those in northern Wellington County are still running.

The snow squalls are expected to weaken overnight.
