Sporting a Team Canada football shirt, Mr. Ford revealed the sign close to Grimsby, Ontario, and took photos with it.
The 24 by 12ft sign is raised on six-foot legs, making its top about 18 feet off the ground – roughly two stories high. The message is also in French.
This display came after Mr. Trump’s executive order instructing US federal agencies to refer to Lake Ontario as “Lake America.”
Ontario premier Doug Ford countered President Donald Trump’s “Lake America” initiative with a billboard-sized message along the Canadian coast.
Following months of tariffs, threats about making Canada the 51st US state, and personal jabs at its leaders, reactions in Canada blend defiance and ridicule.
Mr. Ford stated that Mr. Trump was attempting to rename the lake because Ontario and Canada were “standing up for ourselves,” insisting that the name will endure beyond the president’s term.
“Long after President Trump is gone, it will still be called Lake Ontario,” Mr. Ford mentioned in a video shared on social media.
Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew likened Mr. Trump to an aging rock band trying to revive a past hit.
“You know when a rock band is really over the hill and you see them playing in a casino some song from like 50 years ago? I think that’s where we are with Donald Trump’s presidency right now – he thought he had a real hit, a true classic with the Gulf of Mexico,” Mr. Kinew said, referring to Mr. Trump’s executive order changing the name of the Gulf of Mexico to Gulf of America.
“And he’s trying to bring that back for his base. But I think everyone here finds it kind of sad and not his best work.”
The mockery wasn’t just from politicians; Canadian historian Robert Bothwell was even more critical.
“The greatest country on earth takes this moron seriously?” Mr. Bothwell remarked.

However, Mr. Bothwell pointed out that this disagreement goes deeper than jokes, claiming that Mr. Trump’s ultimate goal is “to subordinate Canada and at best make it a colony or worse absorb it into the United States.”
Nelson Wiseman, professor emeritus at the University of Toronto, suggested that Mr. Trump “would like Canada to behave like a vassal state but it refuses to do so; this irritates him.”
This conflict arises as relations between these long-time allies deteriorate over trade issues. Negotiations fell apart last week as both sides accused each other of late demands while Canada announced retaliatory tariffs set to begin next month.
The order from Mr. Trump also surfaced amid escalating tensions with Mr. Ford. In an interview earlier this week with The Associated Press, Mr. Ford claimed Ronald Reagan would be “throwing up” over Mr. Trump’s tariff policies and would be “disgusted with President Trump.”
Mr. Trump responded by dismissing Mr. Ford’s comments as mere “bluster,” labeling him Prime Minister Mark Carney’s “flunky” and poking fun at him as being “the less charismatic, intelligent, and overall unimpressive brother” of late Toronto mayor Rob Ford.
This past Saturday, Mr. Trump continued promoting his new lake name by sharing a meme showing Canada geese sporting hair similar to his own while shooting rifles as they supposedly “protected” Lake America.
The president has often utilized maps for political messaging purposes; there was even a “Gulf of America” map displayed beside his Resolute Desk in the Oval Office for some time while he has also posted images showing Canada incorporated into the United States or depicted as its 51st state.
The term Lake Ontario originates from the Huron Indigenous people’s word “oniatarí: io,” which translates to “lake of shining waters.”
The Canadian province known as Ontario was established in 1867 and received its name from this lake.
