OPP reported that no threat was found after a private boarding school just north of Peterborough, Ont., went into lockdown on Monday morning.

Officials at Lakefield College School stated that the lockdown procedure was activated “out of an abundance of caution” following a “threatening phone call” received by the school located in the village of Lakefield.

Peterborough County OPP mentioned that just after 10 a. m., the school reached out to them, and officers arrived at the location within minutes.

OPP confirmed that the school had received a bomb threat.

“After a sweep of the school was conducted, it was confirmed that there was no immediate risk to the safety of the students or staff,” OPP said.

The lockdown ended shortly after.

More than 430 students from grades 9 to 12 attend Lakefield College School, which has produced many well-known alumni. Among them are Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, former prince and duke of York; actor Will Arnett; musician Sebastian Bach from Skid Row; former Toronto mayor David Miller and Spain’s current king, Felipe VI.

King Felipe visited the school last week for a private reunion celebrating its 40th anniversary with former classmates, where a new student center currently under construction was named in his honor.

The school expressed gratitude for how responders handled the situation in a statement.

“We are grateful to our students, faculty, staff, emergency responders, and the OPP for their calm and professional response throughout the situation,” they posted on Facebook. “Our emergency preparedness protocols were followed carefully and effectively.”

“The OPP informed us that similar false threat calls targeting schools have recently occurred across the United States, Europe, and more recently in Ontario. Authorities continue to actively investigate these incidents.”

“We understand that events like this can be unsettling for our community members, and student support services remain available. Thank you to our families and community for your trust and support.”

OPP noted that their major crime unit is helping determine where this threat originated from.

Around the same time on Monday morning, York Regional Police Service responded to threats made at eight schools in their area. Investigators believe one suspect might be behind all these calls. In Ottawa, police also looked into threats made at two high schools. No threats were found there either as investigations into swatting continue.
