Drivers on sections of Highway 417 and 416 might have seen new speed limit signs go up on Friday.

Starting Aug. 21, some highways in the capital will see a speed limit increase of 10 km/h. This change was announced back in June by the province, which has raised limits on various 400-series highways across Ontario.

The speed limits on the 416 will rise from 1.5 kilometres south of Fallowfield to County Road 12.

For Highway 417, changes will affect the stretch from the split with Highway 416 to Highway 7 through Ottawa’s western neighborhoods, including Ashton, Stittsville, Kanata, and Bells Corners; this also covers Highway 7 to Appleton Side Road/County Road 17.

In the eastern part of town, the speed limit on Highway 417 will change from Leitrim Road to Hwy. 174.

This decision builds upon earlier adjustments made in 2022 and is set for further expansion in 2024 after a multi‑year pilot project demonstrated that certain highways could safely handle higher speeds.

The government has consistently stated that these increases are “evidence‑based” and align Ontario with other provinces like Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Nova Scotia where a standard limit of 110 km/h is common.
