After Wiseman left the call following his half-hour talk, one advisor from the council – Canada’s former chief trade negotiator Steve Verheul – alerted participants about potential risks linked with the upcoming deal, according to multiple sources.
Verheul successfully guided Canada through tense negotiations with the U. S., which resulted in establishing the Canada-U. S.-Mexico Agreement and also participated in previous NAFTA discussions.
He expressed worries during the council meeting that while Trump’s recent Section 338 tariffs present an urgent threat, Canada might sacrifice long-term benefits if it proceeds with this deal.
