On Wednesday, a total of 55 vehicles underwent inspection during a commercial vehicle “safety blitz” at Fred Barrett Arena on Leitrim Road, resulting in 21 vehicles being taken off the road.

The Ottawa Police Service’s (OPS) Road Safety Unit, working alongside the Ministry of Transportation of Ontario (MTO) and the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), conducted this inspection to verify vehicle safety and compliance, according to a news release.

The 21 vehicles removed from service make up 38 percent of those inspected. The operation also led to 45 charges being issued, along with the removal of 2 license plates and 1 improper annual commercial vehicle inspection sticker.

Authorities mentioned that the inspections revealed problems related to brakes, breakaway devices, wheels and tires, directional and brake signals, suspension components, load securement issues, a disqualified driver, and an improper driver’s license.

The 45 charges covered various offenses such as improper tires, lack of daily trip inspections, expired annual inspections, faulty brakes, CVOR-related matters, overweight vehicles, significant defects, permit violations, various TSSEA offenses and malfunctioning directional signals.

Officers from OPS South District Traffic and Neighbourhood Resource Team also supported this inspection effort.

Officials emphasize that ensuring commercial vehicle safety is crucial for maintaining safe roads in Ottawa for everyone.
