The RCMP announced that a national security team took a youth into custody in the North and South Glengarry area of eastern Ontario in late August due to “a potential threat to the population.”
The police force released a statement on Sept. 10 regarding the arrest made on Aug. 21, describing the execution of two search warrants as a “necessary enforcement action.”
The RCMP applied the Youth Criminal Justice Act, indicating that the individual arrested was under 18 years old.
“At this time, there is no known threat to public safety.… This is a reminder to all [about] the importance of reporting suspicious activity or [behaviours] that can potentially cause a threat to public safety” to local police, they said.
The Integrated National Security Enforcement Team (INSET) responsible for executing the warrants consists of RCMP members along with provincial and local police, according to their news release.
It “collects, shares and analyzes information that concerns threats to national security and criminal extremism/terrorism.”
