A large area in eastern Ontario is dealing with poor air quality as smoke covers the region.
Environment Canada warns that smoke from wildfires in northwestern Ontario may lead to issues with air quality and visibility through Saturday afternoon and evening.
As of 3 p. m. on Saturday, both downtown Ottawa and Kingston were rated at a 9 on the Air Quality Health Index scale, which goes from 1 to 10+.
Cornwall exceeded both cities, registering at a 10 on the scale.
All three areas are expected to drop to a low-risk level of 2 by Sunday.
Belleville’s air quality was at a 5 on the scale by mid-Saturday afternoon but was projected to rise to an 8 later in the day into the evening.
Environment Canada mentioned that air quality conditions and visibility can change quickly every hour, creating noticeable differences over small distances.
The agency noted that people might face irritation in their eyes, nose, and throat, along with coughing or wheezing.
Environment Canada recommends keeping windows and doors closed to prevent smoke from entering homes.
