An Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) officer was killed while on duty on Tuesday near the northern town of Hearst, as confirmed by the service.

According to a release, James Bay OPP officers were investigating around 12:30 p. m. at Kendall Concession Road 7 and Concession Road 6, which is about a three-hour drive northwest of Timmins, when Const. Tarun Bali sustained serious injuries.

He was later pronounced dead.

Authorities did not disclose how Bali lost his life but mentioned that a suspect is in custody.

“His courage and commitment to serving others will never be forgotten,” OPP Commissioner Thomas Carrique shared in a post on social media.

“As we grieve this immeasurable loss, I extend our heartfelt condolences to his loved ones, colleagues and the policing community.”
