Two kids, aged 11 and nine, took their family’s car for a spin and ended up crashing it into a cornfield in the Pembroke area early Monday morning, according to Ontario Provincial Police (OPP).
As per a news release from Upper Ottawa Valley OPP, an officer was on foot patrol in western Pembroke around 2:50 a. m. when he reported hearing tires screeching.
When the police found the car involved, it sped away. Officers did not pursue it.
The vehicle was discovered shortly after abandoned in a cornfield at the intersection of Jean Avenue and TV Tower Road, just west of the city.
A police canine unit located the young drivers about an hour later. Fortunately, neither the 11-year-old who had been driving nor the nine-year-old passenger were hurt, police reported.
After talking with the children’s parents, officers found out they had taken the car without anyone knowing or giving permission.
Since the Youth Criminal Justice Act doesn’t apply to kids under 12, police stated that there would be no charges stemming from this incident.
