The federal government has given the go-ahead for the Crawford Nickel Project in northern Ontario, stating that the mine is expected to attract $5 billion in investment and create 5,000 jobs during its construction phase, plus another 1,300 when it’s fully operational.

Situated about 42 kilometres north of Timmins, Ont., the open-pit nickel-cobalt mine will have a capacity to extract nearly 90 million tonnes of ore each year, contributing $70 billion to Canada’s GDP over its anticipated 41-year lifespan.

This project was sent to the federal government’s Major Projects Office last November and marks the first mine to receive approval from the Impact Assessment Agency of Canada (IAAC) under Prime Minister Mark Carney’s new assessment process.

Environment Minister Julie Dabrusin approved the project despite an impact assessment indicating that it would harm fish and bird habitats, water quality, Indigenous communities, and Canada’s climate goals.

A news release explained that Dabrusin’s decision came after determining that “the potential effects within federal jurisdiction are justified when taking into account the benefits this project will provide.”

This doesn’t mean concerns are being overlooked; the Liberal government imposed several legally binding conditions on the project that must be followed throughout its operation.

These conditions include measures aimed at mitigating negative impacts on Indigenous communities living near where the mine will be established.

A government statement noted that these measures involve reducing any harmful effects on health, socio-economic conditions, physical and cultural heritage as well as current land use for traditional activities.

Managing tailings and further permits

Canada Nickel, which is promoting this project, will need to build a tailings management facility and ensure it’s properly managed and tested throughout the mine’s lifecycle.

“Canada’s impact assessment process is designed to support well-planned projects that benefit communities,” Dabrusin said in a statement.

“Through meaningful Indigenous engagement and evidence-based decision-making, it helps create the conditions for job creation, economic opportunity and responsible development.”

Mark Selby, CEO of Canada Nickel expressed that getting approval for this mine showcases responsible development of essential minerals due to its partnership with all levels of government along with Indigenous groups while adhering to environmental standards.

<p. With approval now secured for this project, Canada Nickel plans to continue developing its engineering plan while securing financing and applying for additional provincial and federal permits needed before construction can start.
