Construction and design professionals looking to expand their understanding of architectural wood have a great hands-on learning opportunity in Ottawa next month.

The Ottawa chapter of Construction Specifications Canada (CSC) is organizing an in-person continuing education seminar, “Specifying Wood with Confidence,” on Wednesday, June 3.

This event will take place from 11:30 a. m. to 1:30 p. m. at Heritage Grade Woodwork located at 2280 Stevenage Dr.

Aimed at helping the industry confidently specify wood for architectural uses, this collaborative session features experts from Heritage Grade, Upper Canada Forest Products (UFP), and the Architectural Woodwork Manufacturers Association of Canada (AWMAC).

The seminar will address key topics to enhance material specification skills, such as:

Wood species, cuts, and grading Veneers and sheet products Specification best practices

There will also be a detailed segment on restoring and rehabilitating historic woodwork. This part will reference the latest AWMAC North American Architectural Woodwork Standards (NAAWS) Guide, specifically focusing on Section 3 (Lumber), Section 4 (Sheet Products), and Section 12 (Historic Restoration).

Featured speakers include Laurie Suikki, AWMAC Ontario chapter manager; Mark Paddison, retired program director of Humber College Cabinetmaking; and Sam Pollock, lead at Heritage Grade Woodwork.

After the educational session, attendees will enjoy an exclusive guided tour of Heritage Grade’s workshop. The event also provides networking opportunities with fellow industry professionals along with a complimentary boxed lunch by Chef Ric’s.

Participants can drive directly to the workshop or opt for transportation via a limousine service. Those interested in coordinating shuttle service can reach out to Maria Cristina Villalba, CSC Ottawa events officer, at ma************@****sh. com.

Registration fees are $60 for CSC members and $85 for non-members, plus applicable fees. Space is limited to a maximum of 24 attendees.

If you’re interested in attending, please register by May 31. For more details or to secure your spot, visit the event’s page on Eventbrite.
