The foundation for Ottawa’s children’s hospital has reached out to police after discovering that a former staff member allegedly “misdirected” funds from community fundraising events.

The brief statement from the CHEO Foundation expresses their disappointment but does not disclose the identity of the individual involved or the amount of money that may be unaccounted for.

“It has come to our attention that proceeds from certain community-organized third-party events were misdirected by a former employee of the CHEO Foundation,” it said.

“Upon learning this, we launched an internal review, retained legal counsel, hired a forensic investigator, submitted a claim to our insurance company and reported the matter to Ottawa Police Services to determine the full scope of the situation.”

The foundation is responsible for raising funds for the hospital, its research initiatives, and the Roger Neilson Children’s Hospice. The CEO of the hospital is part of its board.
