Work has officially started on a new headquarters for Oshawa Power after the utility began construction on a 6.5-acre site in the Thornton Business Park.

Ninety-five years after what was then called the Oshawa Public Utilities Commission moved into their new building in downtown’s south side, Oshawa Power is preparing for its relocation, with plans to move in by the end of 2027.

The new facility will be developed with assistance from three construction partners: Cushman & Wakefield, a global commercial real estate firm with 52,000 professionals around the world; Barry Bryan and Associates, local architects and engineers focused on building architecture, structural engineering, heritage consulting, and project execution; and Fortis Group, the contracted construction company bringing this project to life through their expertise and collaboration.

“We are thrilled to begin the process of moving to a new facility that will better accommodate our fleet, consolidate operations, and allow us to continue providing Oshawa with safe and reliable electricity for decades to come,” enthused Oshawa Power CEO Daniel Arbour when plans for the move were first announced. “We look forward to enhancing our service capabilities, fostering innovation, and supporting our community from our accessible, state-of-the-art facility.”

Oshawa Power has been meeting the city’s electrical needs since 1887 when a group of local businessmen formed the Oshawa Electric Company with just 15 light posts to provide power to a few businesses.

The company’s current headquarters at 100 Simcoe St. S has been their home base since 1931.
