DRPS Constable-in-Training Tyrone Magbitang was honored at his funeral in Oshawa Friday
A Durham Region Police Constable-in-Training who lost his life while heading to the Ontario Police College on July 7 was celebrated at his funeral in Oshawa today for his “kindness, compassion, dedication, and unwavering commitment to others.”
Tyrone Magbitang’s family, friends, and police officers from across Ontario gathered to pay tribute to him for “the profound impact” he had on so many people, said Durham Police Chief Peter Moreira.
“Although his life was far too short, his influence will carry on through the lives he touched, the friendships he formed, and the example he set,” Moreira stated while expressing gratitude to Magbitang’s family and policing partners with the OPP and in Toronto and London.
“To Tyrone’s family and loved ones, please know that you are in our thoughts and that the DRPS family stands with you today and in the days ahead. Tyrone will always be remembered as one of our own.”
Moreira also requested that residents keep in mind the other Constable-in-Training (who has not been named) who suffered critical injuries in the crash that took his partner’s life.
“We remain hopeful about their continued recovery.”
Magbitang, 27, was involved in a collision with a transport truck while en route to the police college last week. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The other officer-in-training who was with him sustained serious injuries in the incident.
Magbitang joined the Durham Regional Police Service as a Special Constable in May 2023. In April of this year, he moved closer to fulfilling his “lifelong dream” of becoming a police officer when he was chosen as a police constable recruit, Moreira shared.
“The kindness shown by our community, policing partners, and everyone who reached out has been a source of comfort during this tough time,” Moreira said. “Tyrone’s kindness, dedication, and positive spirit touched many lives, and your messages will mean so much to his family, friends, classmates, and colleagues.”
