This week, the City of Oshawa and Ontario Tech University celebrated a new $2 million investment from the province aimed at enhancing automotive technology and smart mobility solutions.

The announcement took place at the university’s Automotive Centre of Excellence in north Oshawa, where it was revealed that this funding will support the Durham Region Innovation and Vehicle Ecosystem (DRIVE), one of the sites recognized by the Ontario Vehicle Innovation Network (OVIN).

This funding is part of a larger $17.5 million initiative across nine technology development sites, complemented by $32.8 million from industry investments and over $19.3 million from public sector contributions, totaling nearly $70 million.

The centres create a network for small- and medium-sized businesses in Ontario to develop, test, and market automotive and smart mobility technologies throughout the province, according to Ontario Economic Development Minister Vic Fedeli. He stated that these regional sites will equip local companies with “the tools, infrastructure and expertise” necessary to bring made-in-Ontario innovations to market more quickly.

“By nurturing collaboration among industry, municipalities, and academia, we’ll continue to place Ontario at the forefront of automotive innovation while driving economic growth,” he added.

The nine locations across Oshawa, Hamilton, Kingston, Ottawa, Simcoe, Waterloo, Windsor-Essex, York Region, and northern Ontario serve as hubs connecting post-secondary institutions with regional innovation centers, incubators and accelerators along with industry partners as well as municipal resources.

The Oshawa-Durham site is spearheaded by the City of Oshawa in collaboration with Ontario Tech. It also has support from key regional partners like ACE Climatic Aerodynamic Wind Tunnel, Brilliant Catalyst, 1855 Technology Accelerator, Durham Region itself, and Whitby Town.

These regional hubs give businesses access to advanced equipment such as the ACE Climatic Wind Tunnel in Oshawa; Impact Chemistry Advanced Laboratories in Kingston; NORCAT Underground R& D Mine in Sudbury; plus business advisory services designed to speed up technology commercialization developed within these sites.

“Oshawa and Durham Region are leading Canada’s shift towards better mobility solutions,” stated Oshawa Mayor Dan Carter. “OVIN’s backing for DRIVE highlights our region’s unique capabilities.” He noted that by uniting industry players with academia and government bodies, DRIVE is accelerating advancements in electric mobility systems alongside areas like advanced manufacturing and AI-fields where Durham excels.”

According to Claudia Krywiak from the Ontario Centre for Innovation CEO,this initiative establishes a comprehensive network that transforms local innovations into “real economic impact.”

“We’re enabling SMEs to access top-tier infrastructure which helps them commercialize more swiftly while boosting supply chains so they can compete on a global scale. This investment guarantees that made-in-Ontario mobility technologies lead job creation, growth, and long-term competitiveness throughout our province,” she explained.

The total financial commitment toward Oshawa and Durham approaches nearly $7 million-over $2.4 million being matched by industry investments along with around $2.5 million available through public sector initiatives providing opportunities for real-world testing zones、mentorship、workspace sharing、and acceleration support.

Councillor Tito-Dante Marimpietri highlighted how this funding positions both Oshawa和Durham as leaders in next-generation mobility、advanced manufacturing、and smart transportation innovation. He emphasized,“This investment solidifies Oshawa’s role as a global leader within Ontario’s innovation economy-fueling job creation, supporting local SMEs, and promoting sustained economic growth across our metropolitan area以及wider Durham Region.”

DRIVE is led by the City of Oshawa along with its partnership through Ontario Tech,并且得到了ACE Climatic Aerodynamic Wind Tunnel,Brilliant Catalyst,1855 Technology Accelerator,以及Durham Region和Whitby Town等关键区域合作伙伴的支持.

Raed Kadri,OVIN
