Country artists from Durham Region had a strong presence at the 14th annual Country Music Ontario Awards, held Sunday at Port Credit Memorial Arena in Mississauga.
Up-and-coming star Sacha, who relocated to Oshawa during her junior high years, was nominated for three awards and took home two significant ones: Female Artist of the Year and Album of the Year for Women in the Mirror.
Tyler Lorette, a talented 21-year-old singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist from Courtice, shared the Breakthrough Artist of the Year award with Jessica Sevier – marking the first tie in CMA Ontario history.
Robin Ottolini from Uxbridge also received three nominations and jointly won the Songwriter of the Year Award with Sevier, Dave Woods, and Derek Hoffman for their song Good to Drive.
Owen Riegling (from Mildmay in Bruce County) achieved a remarkable feat by winning all three categories he was nominated for: Male Artist of the Year, Single of the Year for Taillight this Town, and the Fan Choice Award.
Other notable winners included James Barker Band for Group of the Year and Ryan Cassar for Musician of the Year.
The CMAOntario Awards Show wrapped up the CMAOntario Festival & Awards Weekend with performances by Riegling, Lorette, Sevier, Sully Burrows, Olivia Mae Graham, Elyse Saunders, School House, Cory Marks, Les Rats d’Swompe and The Western Swing Authority serving as the house band.
The CMAOntario Awards honor talent and achievements within Ontario’s country music scene across 17 categories alongside special awards.
