Oshawa has moved up from fourth place in Ontario to the top spot in a ranking that city officials would prefer to avoid.
The unemployment rate in the city held steady at 8.5 per cent in June, making it the highest in Ontario (alongside Kitchener-Waterloo-Cambridge) and second overall in Canada, trailing only Kelowna, B. C., which stands at 9.2 per cent.
In May, Oshawa’s unemployment rate of 8.5 per cent was lower than Kitchener, London, and Barrie – all at 8.7 per cent – but both London and Barrie saw their rates decrease to 8.2 per cent afterward.
Kelowna led the country with an unemployment rate of nine per cent back in May, while London reported the highest rate in April (9.2 per cent alongside Barrie) and March (9.1 per cent).
Other cities in Ontario with high unemployment rates for June include Windsor at eight per cent, Guelph at 7.5 per cent, Toronto at 7.2 per cent, Ottawa and Hamilton both at 6.9 per cent, Belleville-Quinte West at 6.7 per cent, and Peterborough, Brantford, and Greater Sudbury each sitting at 6.4 per cent.
On a national level, Abbotsford-Mission in B. C ranks just behind Oshawa and Kitchener with an unemployment rate of 8.3 percent while Moncton, N. B had the eighth-highest rate in Canada at 7.9 percent; Red Deer Alberta and Nanaimo B. C rounded out the top ten at 7.4 percent.
Toronto’s unemployment rate has improved from its May figure of 7.6 percent.
Nanaimo saw the biggest drop as it decreased from an unemployment rate of 8.5 percent in May to just 7.4 percent one month later.
The national average for unemployment stands at six point five percent according to Statistics Canada which publishes seasonally adjusted three-month moving averages for major cities but warns that these figures can vary significantly due to small sample sizes used for calculations.
