Mac Kinnon Brothers Brewing Company near Bath is one of hundreds that will be allowed to sell their beer in other provinces.
A new agreement that lets consumers buy alcohol directly from producers across much of Canada is being celebrated by a local brewery, even if it won’t significantly boost sales.
Dan Mac Kinnon, the brewmaster at Mac Kinnon Brothers Brewing Company near Bath, mentioned that this deal is a step forward as it eliminates trade restrictions that have historically hampered alcohol sales between provinces.
On Tuesday, Ontario became one of eight provinces to sign an agreement allowing consumers to order beer, wine, and spirits directly from producers in participating regions for personal use.
Mac Kinnon noted that his brewery sells around 90 percent of its beer within a 50-kilometer radius, so this change probably won’t lead to a big increase in overall sales.
However, he added that the agreement will enable the brewery to finally send beer to former residents of the Kingston area and others with the Mac Kinnon name living across Canada who often reach out for orders.
Mac Kinnon also pointed out that shipping costs may restrict how frequently customers place long-distance orders since transporting beer can be pricey.
