Four new schools that are set to open this fall have now been named, as announced by the Durham District School Board. This includes a high school in north Oshawa, a public school also located in Oshawa’s northern area, and two elementary schools in Whitby.
The names were chosen following “extensive” public consultations and recommendations from the school board during the spring, with final approval from the Ontario Ministry of Education granted on July 6.
Cedar Valley Secondary School, located on Windfields Farm Drive in Oshawa, is named after the nearby conservation area. The name pays tribute to the local landscape and to the white cedar plant, which symbolizes strength and healing. Waaban Public School on Steeplechase Street derives its name from the Anishinaabemowin term ‘Waaban,’ meaning dawn or east, representing new beginnings, hope, and a bright future for its students. Whitby Meadows Public School on Coronation Road refers to the quickly developing residential area that it will serve. Heartwood Public School on Limoges Street in Whitby takes its name from ‘heartwood,’ which represents the durable inner core of a tree – symbolizing a nurturing environment that aims to support students.
The naming process included input from thousands of local students, families, staff members, and community participants who shared suggestions to make sure each school captures its community’s unique identity and aspirations. The school board detailed this process on their website.
“These names represent more than just brick and mortar – they reflect the geography, culture, and rich diversity of Durham Region,” said Andrea Mc Auley, the board’s Superintendent of Education, Leadership and Innovative Learning. “Together, we are laying a strong foundation for the future of our students.”
Cedar Valley Secondary School will accommodate 1,387 students. Each new elementary school is designed for 634 students.
Construction is progressing well; Cedar Valley, Waaban Public School, and Whitby Meadows are all scheduled to open in September while Heartwood is expected to welcome students in October.
