Just two weeks ago, the Oshawa Fire Wolves were at the bottom of the National Lacrosse League standings with a record of 2-10 and not much hope for making it to the playoffs.

Now, the team is enjoying a two-game winning streak and has climbed out of last place, holding on to a slim chance – albeit a chance – for playoff contention.

“Winning is always a good thing,” said club president Chris Porreca, who focuses more on off-the-field activities while leaving the details of their success to players and coaches. “It’s always big when you win. That’s why the players play the game.”

The atmosphere in the stands and throughout the community is where Porreca and his team truly shine, as they get ready for an exciting promotion during Saturday’s game against Rochester (5-8) at the Tribute Centre featuring Marvel Super Hero Night.

The players will don Deadpool-themed jerseys that will be auctioned off, and fans are encouraged to come dressed as their favorite super hero, with a contest for best costume.

The Fire Wolves will also honor local ‘Community Super Heroes’ during this event, nominated by fans. The club aims to recognize military personnel, police officers, firefighters, teachers, nurses, or anyone making a positive impact in their communities, Porreca noted.

“From an entertainment perspective we have to make sure we have everything in place so people will want to come back, no matter what the outcome of the game was.”

And come back they have! Despite having less than stellar results in their first season since relocating from Albany, New York last summer.

Fans have filled up the arena in downtown Oshawa for each of their five home games so far; three were sellouts while another nearly reached capacity with an average attendance of 5,630 – a notable increase from last season’s average of 5,013 in Albany.

Restaurants and bars around downtown have been busy while streets fill up before games as enthusiastic lacrosse supporters welcomed this franchise into what has always been known as a stronghold for lacrosse talent in Oshawa and Durham Region.

“The support has been tremendous. People here know the game well; we anticipated this level of backing coming in,” Porreca said. “Are we happy? Yes. The fans have been outstanding.”

Porreca feels “very optimistic” about another victory on Saturday and believes that Marvel Super Hero Night will be well-received too; he added that all attendees within the first 3,000 will receive a special National Lacrosse League comic featuring Oshawa’s own Dyson Williams on its cover.

“It’ll be a fun night. Every night is fun because we want something enjoyable for everyone.”
