The federal government and the province of Ontario are coming together to provide over $41 million for two affordable housing projects in Oshawa, both managed by the Durham Region Non-Profit Housing Corporation.
These initiatives include a 66-unit stacked and back-to-back townhouse development at 1707 Ritson Rd. N., located in the northern part of the city, as well as Conant Place, a 54-unit affordable housing complex at 1050 Simcoe St. S. on the opposite side of town. Together, they will feature a variety of unit sizes and affordability levels to cater to residents’ needs in Oshawa, totaling 120 units.
Funding for these developments comes from the Ontario Priorities Housing Initiative and the Canada-Ontario Community Housing Initiative, along with contributions from the federal-only Affordable Housing Fund.
The project at 1707 Ritson Road is expected to be finished by December and has received $27.5 million from the federal Affordable Housing Fund, $4 million from the Canada-Ontario Community Housing Initiative, and $3,161,855 from the Ontario Priorities Housing Initiative.
For Conant Place-designed to help reduce the waiting list for senior rental housing in Durham Region and includes affordable units for seniors and those with disabilities-the funding consists of $17.5 million through the Affordable Housing Fund (with part of this announced back in August 2024), $6.9 million from the Ontario Priorities Housing Initiative, $1,344,726 contributed by the City of Oshawa, and $47,600 from CMHC Seed funding.
Conant Place was completed last September.
A range of federal, provincial, and municipal leaders gathered in north Oshawa on Friday to make this announcement. Among them was Ajax MP Jennifer Mc Kelvie who serves as Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Housing and Infrastructure.
“The projects announced today will make a real difference for people here in Oshawa. With every project like these we’re getting closer to the country we want – one where everyone has a safe, affordable place to call home.”
Ontario’s Housing Minister Rob Flack remarked that this funding highlights his government’s “commitment” to providing more options for affordable housing. “We will continue advancing community-driven housing solutions that meet unique local needs and help our most vulnerable citizens find a place to call home.”
This past March saw Canada and Ontario sign off on their partnership aimed at enhancing housing availability while also supporting vital transit initiatives and economic growth. Through this new collaboration, both governments plan to match costs up to a total of $8.8 billion over ten years specifically focused on infrastructure projects that support housing within Ontario; priority will be given to municipalities that effectively lower development charges.
“Today isn’t about announcing another project – it’s about proving we can deliver,” stated Tracy Greig, CEO of Durham Region Non-Profit Housing Corporation. “When government aligns, partners step up, and builders like Daniels execute, the result is simple: families getting the keys to a safe, stable, affordable home this year.”
“This development exemplifies what can happen when government entities collaborate with non-profits and private sector players towards a common goal: creating safe homes that are budget-friendly for families,” added Jacob Cohen President of Daniels Corporation. “This type of ‘whole-of-community’ approach is precisely what our country needs right now. It’s impactful-and it’s how we start making progress on solving our affordable housing issues.”
Tito-Dante Marimpietri chairing Oshawa’s Economic Development Services Committee emphasized that these projects reflect collaborative efforts necessary for development that meets “both our growing city’s demands while maintaining community character.”
“By working together we are building inclusive communities that are sustainable while being supportive of those who proudly reside in Oshawa.”
