Blanche Rivet passed away peacefully on Thursday, June 19, 2025, in Fergus, Ontario, at the age of 87, surrounded by her loving daughters, Laureen and Christine.

She was predeceased by her beloved husband Marcel (1979) and their infant daughter Louise Patricia Anne (1961). She also lost her parents, Abe and Jeanne Gignac; her dear brothers Omer, Abie, Emile, Frank and Dennis; and her devoted sisters Vicky Law, Hazel Morrison and Jeannette Webb. Additionally, she was predeceased by her cherished sons-in-law Christopher August (2019) and Bill Walker (2017).

Blanche is survived by her dear sisters Rita Capy and Betty Dell; her treasured granddaughters Abby and Lexi Walker who made her so proud; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and friends.

Our Mum was born on February 28, 1938 in Spanish, Ontario during the Great Depression. She faced many challenges while growing up with her brothers overseas during the Second World War. Her experiences shaped her resilience through tough times like many from that era. Even later in life, she held onto that frugality – never throwing away a Kentucky Fried Chicken bucket or a bag of sand if they could be used again.

Mum eventually moved to Sault Ste. Marie to work at Capy’s Restaurant alongside her sisters before pursuing nursing studies at St. Mary’s School of Nursing where she graduated in 1960. She approached both her professional life as a registered nurse and personal life with love and kindness. She worked mainly in pediatric care but later shifted to long-term care in the Soo where she cared for people throughout their lives.

When our dad passed away unexpectedly years ago, Mum became the sole provider for two teenagers after being a stay-at-home mom. At the age of 41-and fueled by her Roman Catholic faith-she returned to nursing school to support us through university.

Mum retired to Mount Forest to be closer to family while helping raise Abby and Lexi.

She felt immense gratitude for all the love shown by family members including Aunt Jackie, Aunt Gisele, Uncle Peter and Aunt Leslee.

In her free time Mum loved gardening, reading books about hockey games she enjoyed watching; knitting blankets for loved ones; quilting beautiful patterns which are now cherished keepsakes hanging proudly in our homes. She was an example of strength for us-a guiding light we’ll always look up to-and we will miss everything about how she cooked delicious meals that had everyone hoping for an invitation over at our house along with how welcoming she’d make anyone feel just with a smile.

A heartfelt thank you goes out to the amazing staff at Wellington Terrace in Fergus for their compassionate care during this time.

The family invites you to join us in honoring Blanche’s life at a funeral mass on Tuesday June 30th ,2026 , at Precious Blood Cathedral located at 778 Queen Street East, Sault Ste. Marie , Ontario. Mass begins promptly at eleven o’clock followed by refreshments served within church hall. We’d be delighted if you could attend this celebration of such an incredible woman’s journey.
