With heavy hearts, we share the news of John (Johnny) Blair Chesnutt’s passing from Rocklin in the early hours of Friday, August 22, at his home at the age of 71.

Originally from New Glasgow, Johnny’s first memory was riding a tractor and wagon from Mountville to Union Centre when he was just three years old. He grew up on a farm alongside many siblings. At 15, he left home and moved to Westville where he lived on Irving Street with his surrogate Mom, Marg Macintosh, and her boys.

He spent a year studying carpentry at NSCC before working in scaffolding in Newfoundland. Eventually, he began a long career as a heavy equipment operator and truck driver. There wasn’t a piece of machinery-from dozers to excavators-that he couldn’t operate. For several years, he ran his own truck and business before working for various other companies. Although he loved his work, he always preferred being home each night in his own chair with family and TV. He was known as an expert in his field; quick-thinking and skilled at handling any situation. As he often joked with everyone “I am the best”.

Johnny led a full life despite facing challenges due to his lifestyle choices; however, he never complained about them. He accepted the consequences of enjoying life to its fullest. His goal was to work until age 70 but fell short by just three months when health issues arose following a detached retina.

He was born to the late Lloyd and Isabel Chesnutt (Cameron). In 1984, Johnny married Mary (Gordon), the love of his life; together they created a busy household while adding two more children to their blended family over 41 years. He is survived by his wife Mary; children Angela (Kenny, Olivia), Tracy (Stephanie), Jody (Meredith), Mary Ellen (Mike, Simon, Lucas, Hannah, Willow), and Megan (Tristan, Blake, Kaitlin, Jodi); along with his godson Cody Chesnutt; siblings Jean, Bobby (Janie), Mike (Esther), Nancy (Al), Kelly (Beth), Ruthie, Trish, Tony; brothers-in-law Jim and Ron Gordon; numerous cousins; nieces; and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents-in-law David and Treva Gordon as well as siblings Jim, George, Cathy and Joanie.

The family wishes to express gratitude towards NP Jessica Sharpe and VON for their excellent support-especially Kathy, Lori-Anne, Lyndsey and Melissa. A special thanks goes out to friends Kevin and Tanya; Gordon; Darren; Bob; Jeff; Frank; Bert; Marinus whose regular calls/visits kept him connected with county happenings while sharing stories from yesteryears.

He is currently resting at Eagles Funeral Home with visitation scheduled for Wednesday August 27 from 2-4 pm and again from 6-8 pm. The funeral service will take place at Eagles Chapel on Thursday August 28 at 11 am followed by burial in Mill Brook Cemetery along with a reception at Mill Brook Community Club afterwards.

If desired donations may be made to Mill Brook Cemetery. Family flowers only please.
