It is with heavy hearts that we share the news of John (Johnny) Blair Chesnutt’s passing at home in Rocklin during the early hours of Friday, August 22, at the age of 71.

Born in New Glasgow, his earliest memory was traveling from Mountville to Union Centre by tractor and wagon when he was just three. He spent his childhood on a farm with many siblings. At 15, he left home for Westville, where he lived on Irving Street with a surrogate mom, Marg Macintosh, growing up alongside her boys.

He took one year of carpentry at NSCC before working in scaffolding in Newfoundland. He then embarked on a lifelong career as a heavy equipment operator and truck driver. There wasn’t a machine-dozers to excavators-that he couldn’t operate. For several years, he owned his own truck and business before working for different companies thereafter. While he loved his job, he always wanted to be home each night in his chair watching television with family. Known as an expert in his field, he excelled at every task. As he would humorously claim, “I am the best.”

Johnny led a full life that often came with challenges due to his lifestyle choices; however, he never complained and faced the consequences of enjoying himself head-on. His goal was to work until 70, but various health issues interrupted those plans just three months shy of reaching that milestone when he dealt with a detached retina.

He was the son of the late Lloyd and Isabel Chesnutt (Cameron). In 1984, Johnny married Mary (Gordon), who was the love of his life; together they created a bustling household while adding two more children to their blended family over their 41 years together. He leaves behind his wife Mary; children Angela (Kenny, Olivia), Tracy (Stephanie), Jody (Meredith), Mary Ellen (Mike, Simon, Lucas, Hannah, Willow), and Megan (Tristan, Blake, Kaitlin, Jodi); along with his godson Cody Chesnutt; siblings Jean, Bobby (Janie), Mike (Esther), Nancy (Al), Kelly (Beth), Ruthie, Trish and Tony; brothers-in-law Jim and Ron Gordon; numerous cousins; nieces; and nephews. He is predeceased by his parents as well as parents-in-law David and Treva Gordon and siblings Jim, George Cathy and Joanie.

The family extends gratitude to NP Jessica Sharpe along with VON for their wonderful support-especially Kathy, Lori-Anne, Lyndsey and Melissa. A heartfelt thanks goes out to friends Kevin and Tanya, Gordon, Darren, Bob Jeff Frank, Bert and Marinus whose regular calls and visits kept him connected to what was happening around town while reminiscing about past stories.

He will be resting at Eagles Funeral Home with visitation on Wednesday August 27 from 2-4 pm and 6-8 pm. The funeral service will be held at Eagles Chapel on Thursday August 28 at 11 am followed by burial in Mill Brook Cemetery with reception afterward at Mill Brook Community Club.

If you’d like to make a donation please consider Mill Brook Cemetery. Family flowers only please.
