It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Helen Theresa Petro “Baba” on June 20, 2026, at the age of 96.

Born on August 7, 1929, in Pusovce, Slovakia, Helen was the daughter of the late Joseph and Mary Zarnay (née Singlar). She was predeceased by her siblings Mary, Anne, Andy, Margaret, and Sue.

Helen immigrated to Canada, where she built a life centered on faith, family, and hard work. She was the devoted wife of the late Michael Petro, and together they opened Helen’s Confectionary and raised six children: Bill (Kim), George (Brenda), Theresa (late Craig), Patrick (Clara), David (Kathryn), and Jason (Heidi).

She was a proud grandmother to Sarah, Brent, Neil, Brooke (Mike), Lauren (Antonio), Hannah (Jim), Rose, Mack, Evelyn, Emma, and Chet. She also enjoyed being a loving great-grandmother to Milo and Enzo.

Helen’s deep Catholic faith guided her through life. Her greatest happiness came from caring for her family and preparing meals with love. Her kitchen often became a warm gathering spot for family and friends where traditions thrived and cherished memories were created.

People will remember Helen for her kindness, strength, generosity, and steadfast commitment to those she cared about. The values she instilled-faithfulness to God, compassion for others, and the importance of family-will continue in those she leaves behind.

A heartfelt thank you goes out to the PSWs who supported Helen during her last years so she could live independently in her home.

Visitation will take place at Windsor Chapel Banwell at 11677 Tecumseh Rd. E in Windsor on Friday June 26 from 2:00pm until 4:00pm and again from 6:00pm until 8:00pm. A funeral mass will be held at Good Shepherd Catholic Church on Saturday June 27 at 11:00am with visiting one hour before the mass. An interment will follow at Heavenly Rest Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Helen’s memory may be made to the HDGH Foundation – Geriatric Assessment Program (Age Wise Program).

Helen will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
