We are heartbroken to share that Dr. Norman Roy Mesaglio (Doc) has passed away peacefully at the age of 91 in Brantford, Ontario.
He was born on January 22, 1935, in Sault Ste. Marie, where he completed his high school education. Thanks to his Aunt Enis Meleski’s generosity, he attended Michigan Tech to study Chemical Engineering. After graduating, he worked at Algoma Steel for two years but soon decided he wanted more independence. This ambition led him to enroll in the University of Toronto Medical School, earning his M. D. in 1965. He went on to specialize in Ophthalmology at Queen’s University, where he met Catherine Swan, who was his junior resident and later became his wife. Following graduation, he had a brief practice stint in Cranbrook, British Columbia but returned East after hearing from his childhood friend David Greig about an opportunity in Ophthalmology in Brantford.
Roy and Catherine spent five decades living along the Grand River in Brantford while raising their three daughters-Anne, Mary, and Sarah-and building thriving practices alongside wonderful friendships. Throughout his life, he pursued many hobbies; among them were cycling with friends who humorously called themselves “The Weathercocks,” as they often rode into headwinds.
He also loved fishing and traveled to secluded spots with close friends for this pastime.
Other activities he enjoyed included making wine, skiing, and later playing croquet weekly with some cherished friends.
Roy retired from his practice in 2004 and embraced this new chapter of life with enthusiasm. He and Catherine explored various parts of the world and delighted in spending time with their children and grandchildren.
He is survived by his sister Linda (Frank) and brother Paul (Alanna). He was predeceased by his sister Beverley (Mike) and grandson Sasha. His wife Catherine will miss him dearly along with their daughters Anne (Phillip), Mary (Javier), and Sarah (Jason). His grandchildren Kiera, Nadia, Jack, Emily, and Megan will
also feel the loss of their grandfather deeply.
A celebration of Roy’s life will take place at the Brantford Golf and Country Club located at 60 Ava Road on Saturday, August 29, 2026 from 2:00 – 5:00 p. m.
