It is with heavy hearts that we share the news of Joanne Linda Mc Macken’s passing on July 13, 2026, in Thunder Bay, Ontario, at the age of 76.
Joanne was born on July 26, 1949, in Iroquois Falls, Ontario. She grew up and went to school in both Twin Falls and Iroquois Falls before pursuing her education at universities in Washington, D. C., and Ottawa, Ontario. In 1988, she graduated with a degree in American Sign Language (ASL) and started an impressive career as a professional ASL interpreter in Thunder Bay.
For an incredible 37 years, Joanne was the sole professional ASL interpreter serving Northwestern Ontario. She retired in 2021 after a career marked by commitment, kindness, and outstanding service. Her passion for her work was evident; she held deep love and respect for the Deaf community and its culture. This passion is beautifully captured in her own words:
“The language of deaf people is full of movement. It is not linear; it is visible and physical. Spoken languages cannot be compared to the beauty of signed language.”
Outside her professional life, Joanne was a dedicated advocate for dog rescue and fostering. Over the years, she welcomed countless foster dogs into her home and heart but most recently treasured her beloved dog, Cohen. She firmly believed that every dog deserved a safe and loving home and worked diligently to make that happen. Additionally, Joanne was an active participant in the Thunder Bay Curling Association where she enjoyed many competitive curling seasons while making lasting friendships.
Joanne leaves behind one sister; numerous nieces and nephews across Canada and France; along with cousins Patti Knowles from Iroquois Falls and Charlene Plaskett from Thunder Bay. She was preceded in death by her parents Wilbur and Agnes Mc Macken; her sister Judith; as well as her close friend, partner, and devoted caregiver Bernard Melanych.
A celebration of Joanne’s life will take place on Sunday, September 13, 2026, from 1:00 p. m. to 4:00 p. m. at the Slovak Legion in Thunder Bay.
