It’s with heavy hearts that the family of Janice Balak announces her passing on July 17, 2026, after a short illness.

Janice was born in Terrace Bay and relocated to Thunder Bay when she was young. She grew up in Current River, where she formed many lasting friendships, including with her husband, Bob. As a kid, she loved skiing at Mount Baldy during winter and enjoyed traveling and camping with her family in the summer.

Throughout her career, Janice worked at Ontario Hydro (Hydro One) in various roles. She was a dedicated employee who built many strong relationships along the way. During her retirement ceremony, her supervisor mentioned that Janice always had the best outfits in the office – she had a knack for fashion and always looked fantastic.

Trout Lake was where she loved to spend summers. She enjoyed watching sunsets from the front deck and hosting family dinners. Her family will miss Janice’s amazing cooking. From flaming Christmas puddings to refreshing peach desserts in summer, everything was delicious and made with care. She was a gracious host.

Throughout her life, Janice traveled extensively. She was curious about different cultures and loved learning from each experience. Cuba held a special place in her heart as she visited there every year with Bob, forming wonderful connections with its people. Family vacations to Europe created unforgettable memories for everyone involved. Janice truly believed in taking time for oneself.

Janice is survived by her husband Bob; daughters Kathryn Balak and Tara Rustan-Matte (Alain); Kevin and Kayla Matte; father Duncan Mc Kenzie; sister Heather Gray (Alan); their son Bryan (Robyn) and little Adelyn. Many cousins and close friends will also miss her dearly. She was predeceased by her mother Rita Mc Kenzie.

The family extends their gratitude to the nursing staff on 1A at Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre for the exceptional care given to Janice during her stay. The support from the palliative care team – Robert, RN and Dr. Bezanson has also been greatly appreciated for helping make this tough time somewhat easier.

In line with Janice’s wishes, there won’t be any formal service held. Online condolences can be shared at www. sargentandson. com

We are all just walking each other home…
