Mr. James Garner “Jamie” Scott passed away on Wednesday, April 8, 2026. Born on March 26, 1971, in Woodstock, Ontario, Canada, he was the son of the late Joseph Garner Scott and Ann Marie Mc Namara Scott. Jamie moved with his family from Canada to South Carolina as a baby and Columbia was the only hometown he ever knew. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church where he received his First Communion, was confirmed and served as an altar boy. He attended Fairwold School and graduated when he turned 21. Jamie’s first job was at Columbia Bagel in Trenholm Plaza until he joined the family business, Pioneer Machinery. Jamie worked at Pioneer Machinery for 20 years helping in the parts department and working in the warehouse. One of his tasks was reading long VIN numbers to restock parts and his items always made it to the right bin. He was well-liked by his coworkers and took great pride in what he did. After retiring, he volunteered at Shandon Methodist church kitchen, at Harvest Hope Food Bank and with Historic Columbia in their gardens. Jamie had a passion for sports and always managed his brother Stephen’s teams during his competitions at Cardinal Newman. He loved college football and over the years supported Georgia, Georgia Tech and Clemson but most of all Alabama Crimson Tide while never backing the Carolina Gamecocks. He enjoyed NASCAR and would carefully list qualifying times each weekend to track where his favorite drivers would start. Jamie traveled all over the Southeast with his father to catch NASCAR races. He loved watching WWE events too and got to attend several matches over the years with family members. A skilled bowler, he competed in bowling during Special Olympics events. He had the honor of helping carry the Special Olympics torch to the South Carolina State Capitol as it passed through Columbia. His one-handed jump shot in basketball could not be beaten in HORSE games. He adored swimming, carrot cake, and watching General Hospital soap opera episodes. Each fall he looked forward to riding rides with his nieces and nephews at the SC State Fair. His happy place was Sullivan’s Island where he spent time with his mom along with their beloved dogs through the years: Bailey, Finnegan, and now Baxter. But Jamie’s biggest love was people. He had a twinkle in his eye that matched his playful sense of humor along with an incredible memory which drew you into friendship; once you were friends with Jamie you were friends for life. Jamie loved having fun; his hearty laugh could light up any room! Being born with Down Syndrome never held him back from living life fully; instead it allowed him to be one of those special few who remained true to himself throughout life’s journey despite early doubts about reaching even one year old-yet here he stood accomplishing amazing things. He is survived by his mother Ann Marie Scott who championed him as her steadfast supporter throughout everything they faced together during life’s ups-and-downs along this journey called life! Also surviving are sister Jackie Howie (Tige), brother Stephen Scott (Amy), sister Christine Scott plus nieces/nephews whom he cherished greatly: Kathryn Ann Scott; Matthew Scott; Brady Scott; Dry Howie & Chloe Howie along with many loving aunts/uncles/cousins/friends too numerous list here! And finally there is Abigail James-a true angel whose care helped support both her own needs alongside those required by our beloved Jamie these past six years! Alongside losing their father-the family remembers grandparents Carman & Marie Scott plus Parnell & Maria Mc Namara who also predeceased him. A funeral mass will take place at eleven o’clock on Monday April twentieth two thousand twenty-six inside St Joseph’s Catholic Church located at thirty-seven hundred Devine Street within Columbia SC followed afterwards by reception hosted back within same venue afterwards before proceeding privately towards Greenlawn Memorial Park thereafter. The family asks that memorial contributions be directed towards Special Olympics South Carolina or Aldersgate Special Needs Ministry honoring dear Jamie instead please.
