Jacob (Jaakko) Joshua Heikkila
39 years old
DOB March 6, 1987
It is with great sadness that the family shares the unexpected passing of Jacob (Jaakko) Joshua Heikkila on May 27, 2026. While enjoying a walk on a lovely spring day in his cherished city of Thunder Bay, Ontario, Jacob experienced an unforeseen and serious cardiac event.
His parents, Hannu and Taina (née Hirsimaki) Heikkila; his sisters, Laura (Javier) and Leena (Matt); and his brother, Lukas are heartbroken over his loss. Also remembering him are his uncles, aunts, cousins, and many close friends. Jacob was predeceased by his grandparents, Eino and Siiri Heikkila, and Lauri and Aino Hirsimaki.
Jacob had a special bond with his Siiri-mummu that he valued throughout his life. In many ways, he embodied her strong sisukas spirit-resilient and determined.
A friend to so many, Jacob was deeply loved and will be missed dearly. Although he faced challenges in life, the last year and a half were particularly bright for him. His excitement for life was evident especially in the kitchen where he loved to cook. A bold and inventive chef, he took joy in making Karjalan Piirakkas, pulla, and other Finnish treats.
His adventurous nature took him to various communities across Ontario; however, Thunder Bay and Manitoulin Island always felt like home to him.
In memory of Jacob’s legacy, instead of flowers please consider donating to any of the organizations that meant so much to him:

The family would like to sincerely thank community members and emergency responders whose prompt actions showed great care and compassion during this difficult time for our family.
A private service will take place this summer for family members.
