Ella was born in Kazan River, Nunavut, Canada on April 7, 1948. She was the daughter of Ootuk and Howmik. The government sent Ella to Winnipeg, Manitoba when she became deaf at eight years old. After about a year, she moved to Vancouver, B. C., Canada. In 1960, she attended Jericho Hill School for the Deaf. There, she learned sign language and how to communicate with her classmates, friends, and teachers. Ella enjoyed sports like swimming teams, volleyball, roller skating, hiking, and camping. She even earned a few ribbons from her races and swimming competitions.

Ella graduated from Jericho Hill School for the Deaf in May 1967. Sister Alice Hanjay introduced her to full-time missionaries of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The missionaries shared the gospel of Jesus Christ with Ella. One of them baptized her in North Vancouver in September 1969. In 1970, she met several hearing friends and learned more about the true gospel while reading the Book of Mormon. Through a folk-dancing club, Johanna introduced Ella to a new friend named Prunella Barlow. The dancers and Ella wore their costumes during folk dancing together for seven years and enjoyed many delicious meals from different cultures.

Ella’s aunt Verna Walker and uncle George Neil were white and helped take care of her as she grew into adulthood. Sadly, many years later Verna Walker and George Neil passed away in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. Ella learned valuable lessons from them throughout her life. Her family had lived near Ennadai Lake in Nunavut since 1957 until they were forced by the Canadian government to relocate due to scarcity of caribou or fish on their land. As a result of this displacement along with others who were affected by it, families experienced extreme hunger for days on end while fighting for food resources amidst difficult circumstances; tragically resulting in some losing their lives.

Ella’s mother held a significant position as queen within their tribe while her father was regarded as an accomplished shaman among Inuit people; both contributed greatly towards shaping family traditions where both Ella’s younger sister Kooyah alongside herself were seen as princesses within their family unit-who raised numerous huskies during happier times when fish caribou flourished around Ennadai Lake allowing hunts regularly out there.

She graduated again from Jericho Hill School for the Deaf located in Vancouver BC Canada back then before moving forward onto Vocation College graduating successfully there too by 1970 working shortly after at photo finishing labs over several subsequent years until meeting Roger Williamson unexpectedly one day at Vancouver Airport around 1973 whereupon showing him around town led them into writing letters back-and-forth over two years leading up towards romantic dating blossoming between them upon Roger relocating Seattle taking things further when he proposed marriage resulting eventually taking vows together being sealed forever thereafter celebrating this commitment made officially within Cardston Alberta Temple on April fools day (April 1st) 1978.
