We are deeply saddened to share the news of the passing of The Honorable Dr. John Frederick Hamm from Stellarton on July 12, 2026, at the age of 88.
He was born in New Glasgow and was the son of Gerald and Irene Hamm, who have both passed away. John finished high school at New Glasgow High School in 1955 and went on to earn degrees in Science from Kings College and Medicine from Dalhousie University. He practiced family medicine in Pictou County for 32 years.
John was actively engaged in Nova Scotia’s medical community. He served as President of the Aberdeen Hospital Medical Staff, President of the Pictou County Medical Society, Chair Executive and President of the Medical Society of Nova Scotia, a council member and President of the College of Family Physicians of Nova Scotia, a Member of the Medical Council of Canada and the Provincial Medical Board, as well as Chair of the Aberdeen Hospital Foundation.
His contributions to family medicine were recognized across the province. He received the Medical Staff Prize at Victoria General Hospital (1963) and an Honorary Fellowship from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (2014).
In addition to his medical work, he served on various boards. He participated in the Steering Committee for Organ and Tissue Donation and Transplantation with Canadian Blood Services, held a position on the National Board for Early Childhood Development, was Chairman at Kings College (2007-2013), led as Chairman for the Assisted Human Reproductive Agency of Canada, and served as Chairman for Northern Resources.
John also had a significant role in politics. He represented Pictou Center as MLA (1993-2006), was Leader of the PC Party of NS (1995-2006), acted as Leader for Her Majesty’s Loyal Opposition (1995-1998), led Third Party efforts (1998-1999), and held office as Premier of Nova Scotia from 1999-2006.
A 2nd Lieutenant in Canadian Army Infantry, he was honored with an appointment as Honorary Colonel for the 1st Battalion, The Nova Scotia Highlanders in 2014.
He dedicated much time to his community. Serving as President for New Glasgow Rangers Hockey Team and Warden at St. George’s Church were just some highlights among many local organizations he supported including being part of boards like Sobey Art Foundation, Honorary Chair for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Pictou County (2010), Chair during Pictou County United Appeal’s 50th Anniversary celebrations, along with co-chairing financial campaigns for Pictou County Wellness Center.
Due to his extensive work in both medicine and politics throughout his life, he received several awards including a Lifetime Achievement Award (2009) along with an Annual Leadership award (2000) from New England – Canada Business Counsel; a Lifetime Achievement Award by Pictou County Chamber of Commerce (2016); Judge J. Elliot Hudson Distinguished Alumnus Award at Kings College (2006); Queen’s Golden Jubilee Medal (2002); Honorary Member designation within Executive Council from Nova Scotia (2007); Award for Excellence by French Language Service Champion (2009); an Honorary Diploma from Nova Scotia Community College (2009); Officer title within Order of Canada recognition awarded in 2010; Queens Diamond Jubilee Medal received back in 2012; plus earned an Honorary Doctorate Degree regarding Civil Law from The University of Kings College during 2014.
He is survived by Genesta, his wife whom he cherished over their 63 years together; three children – John (Wendy), Jeffrey, Jennifer (Jim); along with seven grandchildren – Liam, Sara, Megan, Emily, John Luke, Genesta Lee , and Gregor.
He was predeceased by his parents Irene Cameron & Gerald Hamm; also by sister Geraldine.
Cremation has taken place with plans set aside later on private family burial arrangements.
