Douglas George Plummer, May 14, 1947 – August 3, 2026
It is with great sadness that we share the news of Douglas George Plummer’s passing. He was a man who showed genuine kindness to everyone he met during his 79 years.
He was a loving husband to Alexandra (Sandy), a devoted father to his three sons Adam, Edward (Ted), and Eric, and a grandfather to Eva. He was also the dear son of the late Pat and George Plummer, son-in-law to the late Eve Strachan, and brother-in-law to the late David Strachan. He cherished his siblings Lynn Morse (Paul), Wendy Hinde (Mel), and the late David Plummer (Rosalind). As an uncle, he cared for Christy Hinde; Jeffrey, Julia, Peter and Sam Morse; Gillian, Katherine and Nicola Plummer.
Born and raised in Toronto, Douglas attended Upper Canada College and graduated in 1966. An accomplished swimmer who served as house steward during high school years formed friendships that lasted a lifetime. Even after graduating, he used his personable nature for UCC’s fundraising efforts over the years. He was organizing his class’s upcoming 60th reunion when he was hospitalized in late June 2026.
In his youth, Douglas explored Canada by hitchhiking across various regions. He worked on a ranch in southern Alberta and even lived in France due to his fluency in both official languages of Canada and his talent for making friends wherever he went.
Douglas went on to attend the University of Western Ontario where he obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree. It was there that he met Alexandra Strachan; they married in 1974 after building their bond over many years together. Their first child Eric arrived in 1977 followed by Ted in 1980 and Adam in 1984.
As the family provider, Douglas built a career selling business forms successfully throughout the ’80s. However, as technology shifted how businesses operated causing this industry’s decline, he transitioned into life insurance sales along with benefits and investments during the mid-’90s. With passion for this new role as an independent broker until his death-he brought honesty combined with intelligence while truly understanding each client’s needs.
He had keen insights into history’s unfolding events-especially from a Canadian perspective-and enjoyed playing tennis all through life. Just days before being hospitalized he even participated in a doubles match! His discipline shone brightly when he chose not to drink alcohol starting from 1989-a promise kept throughout his life.
Yet what stood out most about Douglas was how well he listened; gazing into one’s eyes allowing him to grasp feelings deeply while calmly helping others find clarity among confusion.
How will we manage without that special touch? How can we carry on without seeing that caring spark behind his gaze?
