Some people leave their mark on the world, and then there are those like Arthur, who share warmth and love with everyone they meet. With heavy hearts but immense gratitude for the time we had together, we say farewell to my dear husband, my closest friend, the love of my life, and an amazing dad, Arthur James Kontunen.
Arthur passed away peacefully at TBRHSC after facing a sudden cancer diagnosis with bravery and unwavering love for his family. He will be fondly remembered by his wife and best friend, Linda (Cairns); his devoted son, Ian; nephews Greg (Tracy) and Chris Cole from Toronto and South Porcupine, Ontario; along with many cousins he cared for deeply. His walking buddy Lindee certainly misses their evening strolls and frequent visits to see neighbors.
Arthur was born in Port Arthur, ON, on June 24, 1958. He grew up in the ‘Black Bay’ area of Current River where he built lasting friendships throughout his life. With a great sense of humor and a generous spirit, Arthur easily made friends and cherished those bonds fiercely. One special friend was Kristie from across the street who recalls ‘467 Richard Street’ as a welcoming home filled with warmth. It’s no surprise that Arthur had this remarkable ability to make everyone feel loved; it all started with how he was raised.
Arthur attended Black Bay Road School followed by Lakeview High School. At just 16 years old, he landed his first job pumping gas at Big Pines alongside his buddy Tom every other day. After graduating high school, Arthur spent many years in the auto parts industry until one day while heading to work he spotted a HAGI Transit van. Little did he know that this encounter would change everything for him. In true friendly fashion, Arthur chatted with the driver about the job and expressed interest in it. He got hired in 1992 which led to friendships that lasted a lifetime at HAGI and Lift+. Once part of HAGI, Arthur often remarked how much he enjoyed his job-not because of driving the bus-but because it allowed him to bring smiles to people every day. His passengers became friends who trusted him and shared laughter knowing they were cared for deeply.
It was during his time at HAGI that Arthur met Linda. As he told it, their first meeting involved picking her up for the first time in the HAGI van followed by running into each other again at the HAGI Christmas party at Current River Community Centre-the rest is history! They tied the knot on September 27, 1997-friends from both sides had never seen them so happy together! In just a couple of years they would celebrate three decades of marriage-a truly perfect match.
Both Linda and Arthur loved exploring new places together. Before meeting her, Arthur traveled to Churchill in Manitoba visiting good friend Conrad as well as England, Austria, Germany along with Jamaica with close friends Rhonda and Lauri. Shortly after becoming a couple themselves they traversed Canada visiting family along their journey-joking about how this trip would test their compatibility on the road as well as fitting in with each other’s families-turns out they passed wonderfully! Their adventures took them even further including Italy, Bermuda, the Caribbean, and beyond! Family trips included memorable experiences like Disney Cruise with Ian along with visits to Disney World , Universal Studios , and LEGOLAND. In 2016 , they enjoyed traveling down California way attending Desert Trip Music Festival where they witnessed performances from legends like Bob Dylan , The Rolling Stones , Paul Mc Cartney , Neil Young , The Who , and Roger Waters from Pink Floyd. They saw Sir Elton John perform live in Vegas plus Shania Twain back home Timmins. He especially loved bringing Ian to see his very first concert featuring Doobie Brothers followed by Eagles Tribute show. After enjoying such incredible concerts repeatedly stated “I never have to go another concert. I’ve seen best!” From an early age music was something shared between father son filled dancing moments around living room featuring hits like “Life Is A Highway” among other family favorites.
Their lives were made complete when they welcomed Ian Joseph Kontunen into their family on February 6th2002. Arthur excelled as a father sharing lessons about outdoor passions, canoeing, built bonfires, and so much more. Most importantly though he instilled unconditional love emphasizing kindness towards others. Arthur possessed an enormous heart coupled generosity making him undoubtedly an ideal role model leaving behind its essence within Ian today!
The family camp situated on Mc Kenzie Beach became one of favorite spots where laughter rang out whenever guests arrived sharing special moments together over summer weekends. Nephews Greg & Chris regularly visited staying nearby or when longtime friend Anita returned Thunder Bay always popping by. Alongside cousin Len & Shirley joining forces tackling projects working side-by-side reminiscing while making tasks seem fun!
Mornings were particularly cherished moments spent quietly sitting outdoors taking long walks alongside Ian while enjoying canoe rides discovering treasures everywhere they’d go ! Favorite hiking trails revealed deeper appreciation spruce birch trees lining paths. Linda fondly remembers year needing cut down large spruce tree which led turning top portion into delightful “Christmas July” tree adorned paper chains popcorn crafted by hand creating joyous atmosphere around campfire memories now joined countless others capturing essence life lived fully!
Before passing away he lost both parents Leslie Irene Kontunen (Potinteau), sister Gail Cole alongside several beloved grandparents numerous uncles aunties who’ve impacted greatly upon shaping character whom held dear. Likewise loving connections formed through “adoptive family”, Susan Peter Hood(whom predeceased), sons David(Beth), Jeff(Laura), James & respective families became part extended circle support network surrounding them always treasured dearly.
Naming everyone whom contributed positively uplifting us throughout this journey feels impossible-yet words can’t express enough gratitude felt deep down within hearts knowing such wonderful souls surround us daily-we’re truly blessed having you all connected lives together! You know who are your kindness shall remain unforgettable always!
Throughout life lessons taught clearly emphasized value simplicity finding richness little things: Quiet mornings spent camping, wonderful walks woods, laughter shared bonfire evenings, filling living rooms melodies flowing freely whilst sipping wine watching sunsets paint skies beautifully over Mc Kenzie Beach-these moments become greatest treasures left behind forevermore ! Summer brought surprise apple tree planted nineteen years ago finally blossoming full bloom signifying gentle reminder love never really disappears-it shifts forms wrapping itself softly around continuing grow strong irrespective distance apart. Cancer may have taken sight yet diminished neither spirit nor generosity experienced unconditionally given sparking warmth amongst all knew him lives eternally through cherished memories held closely heart !
If asked what makes standout most I wouldn’t focus locations visited concerts attended instead think quietly manner lived everyday choosing kindness over impatience embracing joy simple pleasures typically overlooked.. Never aiming leave behind legacy simply striving fulfill roles good husband, dedicated father, true loyal friend caring neighbor created far-reaching impact couldn’t fathom before departing earthly realm
