Metrolinx has kicked off the expansion of the Oakville GO commuter-rail station, which is part of its CA$15 billion GO Expansion program aimed at enhancing infrastructure to meet rising population and ridership needs.

Oakville stands as the busiest GO Transit station on the Lakeshore West route, coming in second only to Union Station in downtown Toronto across the entire network. According to Metrolinx officials, the whole GO service area-including Greater Toronto and Hamilton Region, Kitchener-Waterloo, Barrie, and Niagara-is projected to reach 15 million residents by 2051.

This expansion initiative is designed to boost capacity for service every 15 minutes or less on key routes, such as Oakville’s Lakeshore West route. The upgraded station will feature renovated platforms with accessibility improvements, a new pedestrian bridge, along with elevators and staircases leading to platforms and parking. Additionally, there will be enhancements in architectural, mechanical, and electrical services.

The design development phase started in December 2024; Metrolinx awarded the construction contract to Kenaidan Murphy Joint Venture back in April this year. However, Metrolinx hasn’t revealed when they expect construction to finish.

Construction teams will set up a temporary widened joint platform so that customers can still access trains while work is taking place.
