The Oakville-based company, Samuel, Son & Co., which owns Nelson Steel, has been hit with a fine of $125,000 due to a workplace injury that occurred just over three years ago at a Stoney Creek facility.

As stated in a release from Ontario’s Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development, the incident took place on Nov. 8, 2023 at Samuel Nelson Technology on Glover Road in Stoney Creek.

The report mentions that a worker was operating a turnstile and down-ender table with electronic controls when another employee noticed that one of the coils was not secured correctly.

The worker went into the space between the two machines to fix the issue.

While attempting to make repairs, the machine was activated unexpectedly, leading to one of the coils falling and injuring the worker seriously.

The ministry concluded that the company did not implement proper safety protocols that could have avoided this injury.

The company pleaded guilty to the charge before the Ontario Court of Justice in Hamilton and was convicted on Nov. 24, 2025.

A fine of $125,000 was imposed along with an additional 25 percent surcharge that will contribute to a special provincial fund aimed at helping crime victims.
