The Tennessee River Line is hosting an American Canoe Association: Level 1 Introduction to Kayaking Skills Course on August 15th at the Oakville Indian Mounds Education Center in Danville. This course is free thanks to the River Line. The Introduction to Kayaking course runs all day (9am-5pm) and focuses on safety, fun, and skill development for beginners in various environments including public, private, and commercial settings. It’s perfect for anyone wanting to feel more confident paddling on the water or those planning to lead paddling activities for River Town programs. No previous paddling experience or training is necessary to take part in this course.

The course will be held on calm waters at the Oakville Indian Mounds Education Center, which is sheltered from wind, waves, and boat traffic and is close enough to swim back to shore if needed. There will be both land-based instruction and practical water training.

Participants will also have the chance to complete an ACA Skill Assessment during their training. Finishing this skills assessment can open up opportunities for more advanced courses through the ACA leading to certifications. TJ Johnson, Programs Manager for the Tennessee River Line, mentions that kayaks, Personal Flotation Devices (PFDs), paddles, and other essential gear will be provided. To register, get in touch with TJ at tjohn268@tennessee. edu or call 530-574-1429. Members of the River Town Lawrence County group will also join in on this training session. The kayaks used during the course will come from the Lawrence County fleet. For additional details about River Towns Lawrence County programming efforts reach out to Donna Shanklin at 256-200-2997.
