A tragic incident has left one child dead and two adults hospitalized after a trailer fire at a home in Oshawa, according to the Durham Regional Police Service (DRPS).

Police arrived at Elgin Street around 2:15 p. m. on Saturday, discovering a trailer “fully engulfed in flames,” stated Acting Staff Sgt. Joanne Mc Cabe during a news conference that evening.

The lifeless body of a child was found inside the trailer, while two adults were transported to the hospital. A man and woman are currently in serious but stable condition.

Mc Cabe mentioned that she didn’t have any further information about the child at this moment.

“We’re here to offer our support. We understand the impact this is going to have on this community,” she said, adding that victim services and officers will be present at the location to assist anyone nearby.

“Right now we’re thinking of the family and our thoughts are with them.”

Two firefighters sustained injuries during the incident, Mc Cabe reported, but they have received treatment for minor burns.

The fire crews successfully put out the blaze and carried out a rescue within the trailer, as noted by Oshawa Fire Chief Stephen Barkwell during the press briefing.

Barkwell indicated that there were 22 firefighters deployed at the scene on Saturday.

“It is very traumatic. Very traumatic for our crews, very traumatic for the community,” said Barkwell.

The investigation into what caused the fire is ongoing, he added.

On social media, DRPS announced that Elgin Street West will be closed between Nipigon Street and Park Road North due to the ongoing investigation.
