The victim of a brutal robbery over the weekend at a money exchange counter inside a grocery store in Mississauga reports that the attack resulted in a broken cheekbone and left him liable for tens of thousands of dollars taken during the incident.

Peel police are currently looking into the robbery. Investigators state that it happened at Iqbal Foods on Erin Mills Parkway near Burnhamthorpe Road W. around 6:50 p. m. on Saturday.

A video capturing the event has been shared widely online.

The footage shows one masked individual with a backpack climbing over a clear partition wall to reach the counter, then repeatedly punching the sole employee present. The man takes off his bag and reaches under the counter. According to police, he stole cash.

Employee assaulted during heist

Sabir Syed mentioned that he was working at the currency exchange and money transfer booth he subleases within Iqbal Foods when the robbers broke in and began attacking him. He described the violent theft as shocking.

“It was so sudden that I didn’t know what happened,” he told CBC Toronto during an interview on Thursday.

In the video, three other men come forward and strike the employee while several bystanders in the store look on helplessly. Then, all four suspects quickly run out of view.

Authorities say that these four individuals escaped in a white Honda CRV and have not yet been located.

Syed shared that one of the robbers punched him multiple times while demanding access to a safe key. Once they realized that it was already open, Syed reported that they stopped hitting him and took around $55,000 worth of various currencies, which included approximately $45,000 in Canadian cash.

Syed noted that this ordeal lasted only about a minute and expressed surprise at how long it took for police to arrive after being contacted. He expected them to be there almost immediately.

“My perception was police would be there right away,” he said.

The Peel police explained in their statement to CBC Toronto regarding response time that they received a 911 call from another person nearly ten minutes after the suspects had left.
K-9 units were dispatched right away, with detectives starting their search for suspects just three minutes after receiving information about the incident, according to officials.

“Patrol officers arrived 17 minutes after receiving notice,” said police spokesperson Tyler Bell in his statement. “This delay, although understandably frustrating for victims like Sabir Syed, falls within what we see as typical when there’s no ongoing threat.”

Support pouring in from family and community

Syed stated that since there’s no insurance for this money loss; he’s held accountable for what his exchange agency lost.
“My kids are helping, supporting me and we will find out how to cope [with] this situation,” he said.
Syed’s daughter Areeba Sabir flew from Vancouver upon hearing about her father’s ordeal.
She mentioned she started fundraising on Go Fund Me after coming across videos of her dad’s attack online-even though she tried not to watch them initially.
The fundraiser went live Wednesday and has already raised over $10,000 by Thursday afternoon according to Sabir’s update...

“As more people from our community saw what happened through social media clips; everyone felt angry and frustrated about my dad’s situation,” she said.
“He’s 65-years-old! He got attacked by younger guys who caught him off guard.”...

The assault resulted in Syed suffering from a fractured cheekbone which may require plastic surgery. He also shared how both himself and other community members now feel unsafe going about daily routines:.I can’t shake off my fear anymore.”.

“When I come out of bank holding some cash; I’m always scared,” he admitted feeling anxious compared to before such incidents occurred.
