Every year, we tend to wrap up the summer with a Blue Rodeo concert at the RBC Amphitheatre in Toronto. It’s always a highlight of our summer. This year’s show, however, created a unique memory that brought encouragement, strengthened personal resolve, and fostered a sense of unity among my fellow citizens and concert attendees during these divided economic and political times. With Lake Ontario as our backdrop and influenced by recent news from the United States regarding the “renaming” of the lake, Blue Rodeo performed their song “Hasn’t Hit Me Yet” towards the end of the night. As we sang along together, it built up to an exciting moment when everyone shouted in one loud, clear voice, “in the middle of Lake Ontario!” It was an impromptu display of pride for Canada. The name will always be Lake Ontario to us. That experience made me think about the history behind this name – something those who have lived along its shores have known and documented for hundreds of years.
