Tarun Bali, a 29-year-old officer with the Ontario Provincial Police who lost his life in the line of duty last week in northern Ontario, was celebrated for his bravery and dedication during a heartfelt funeral on Thursday.

The service saw the attendance of dignitaries, family members, and hundreds of fellow OPP officers who faced heavy rain as they gathered for Bali’s funeral procession at the Mississauga Sports and Entertainment Centre.

Originally from Brampton, Bali and members of the James Bay detachment were trying to stop a vehicle in Hearst, Ont., (around 950 kilometres north of Toronto) at about 12:30 p. m. last Tuesday when he was tragically struck and killed.

Bali is the second OPP officer to die while on duty recently. In April, Brandon Malcolm lost his life in a single-vehicle motorcycle crash on Highway 401 in Cobourg. Just two days after Bali’s passing, Marc Pinizzotto, a Toronto police officer, was shot and killed while executing a search warrant in North York.

Here’s a recap of Thursday’s service:

12 p. m. – Remarks from Bali’s father

Bali’s father, Ashok, described his son as “my love” and shared how he had heard about his dreams of becoming a police officer since he was just two years old.

“My family and I moved to Canada in 2005 and like many hardworking immigrants; my wife and I strived to give our kids every opportunity possible so they could be independent.”

“He wanted to become an officer because he loved being part of this community and truly believed in helping others. We hope that his legacy will remind everyone about the dedication and sacrifices made by officers every day.”

11:45 p. m. – Emotional tribute from Bali’s wife

In tears, Komal Sharma Bali delivered her final words to her husband during her address.

“To Tarun, my words fall short of how I feel but I’m so lucky to have loved you and been loved by you; I’m so proud of you.”

“Thank you for choosing me and loving me deeply. It has been an honor to be your wife; no amount of time would ever have been enough for us but I’ll treasure every moment we had together.”

“You are my greatest blessing, my best friend-the love of my life. I love you completely. Until we meet again, may you rest peacefully.”

During her speech, Sharma Bali reached out “directly” to fellow officers who were with her husband on that fateful day.

“I know some may carry heavy thoughts from that day or replay those moments wondering if there was more you could have done. But please hear this from me-and on behalf of my family-you did everything possible then; sometimes even our best efforts can’t change what happens afterward-and that’s not your fault.”

11:30 a. m. – Emotional words from platoon mates

Sgt. Jay Moore from Dufferin detachment spoke on behalf of Bali’s platoon.

He reminisced about first meeting Bali wearing “the brightest baby blue suit” he’d ever seen-thinking either “this is one cocky or crazy recruit showing up here looking ready for Miami nightlife.”

“Then he turned with that big smile we all recognize from photos saying ‘Hi sir! I’m Tarun Bali,’ without knowing it-I knew my world just changed.”

Referring to him as his “adopted son,” Moore explained that he usually kept distance with direct reports but made an exception with Bali.

“I broke my own rule with him-I brought him into my home; introduced him to my family-he became like a son to me.”

11:20 am – Unity expressed by top OPP official

OPP Commissioner Thomas Carrique remarked that the morning rain preceding bali’s funeral held significance , as numerous fellow officers stood resolute during heavy rainfall.

“As we stood outside this arena , with skies opening up , thunder rumbling around us ; I’d guess if any one standing alone might seek shelter.”

“But together , we remained strong waiting for provincial constable bali ‘s arrival. And despite feeling uncomfortable due wet clothing ; find comfort knowing we’re all united.”

11 :15 am – Premier Ford honors bali ‘s sacrifice

In heartfelt remarks , Premier Ford emphasized Ontario must “never forget ” bali ‘s sacrifice.

“Tarun bali put others before himself leading by example regardless risks taken. This showed especially through compassion bravery shown leading up death.” Ford stated.Ontario Premier Doug Ford Ontario Premier Doug Ford pays his respects as he stands at the casket during funeral service for OPP Provincial Constable Tarun Bali at the Mississauga Sports and Entertainment Centre in Mississauga , Ont., on Thursday , June 18 , 2026. “We may never fully repay gratitude owed province toward them ; but provincial constable bali will always be remembered hero-his legacy remains forever.”
