Peel police report that a 24-year-old man from Brampton is now in custody after he shot at an officer in Mississauga, Ont., on Sunday morning.

In a news release on Sunday, Peel Regional Police stated that officers were patrolling near Torbram Road and Lucknow Drive when they noticed a “suspicious man” running away from a nearby location.

He was described as having something around his chin and jumping over fences, according to Peel police. An officer found the man walking south on Torbram Road and tried to talk to him, but he ran away.

While being chased, the man took out a gun and fired several shots at an officer, Peel police mentioned in their release on Sunday.

The officer wasn’t hit and didn’t suffer any injuries. Additional officers arrived at the scene, two of whom sustained minor injuries during the event, according to Peel police’s statement on Sunday.

The suspect was arrested shortly after and taken to a local hospital for non-life-threatening injuries. Once cleared by medical staff, he was brought into police custody.

In their news release on Sunday, Peel police noted that the man was under multiple court-ordered firearm prohibitions due to past firearm-related convictions. This includes a lifetime ban from owning any prohibited or restricted firearms as well as a 10-year prohibition from possessing any firearms.

Following Sunday’s events, the man faces charges for discharging a firearm with intent and possessing a loaded prohibited or restricted firearm.

Police indicated that this incident does not come under the jurisdiction of the Special Investigations Unit.

The investigation is still ongoing.

This incident follows the recent deaths of two Ontario police officers in separate events this month.

Toronto police Const. Marc Pinizzotto, 43, was fatally shot on June 11 while executing a search warrant at an apartment building in North York. Investigators revealed that the warrant related to multiple shootings, including one connected to an attack on the U. S. Consulate in Toronto back in March.

A 19-year-old suspect has been charged with first-degree murder linked to this shooting.

A few days prior, on June 9, Ontario Provincial Police Const. Tarun Bali, 29, lost his life after being hit by a vehicle while officers conducted an investigation near Hearst.

An 18-year-old man has been arrested and charged with first-degree murder along with dangerous driving and evading arrest from law enforcement officials.

“This is another stark reminder of the dangers our officers face every day while on the front lines working to keep our communities safe,” Peel police Chief Nishan Duraiappah stated in Sunday’s release. “This is another example of the cycle of violent crime that continues to impact our communities and must be stopped.”

Duraiappah expressed gratitude that no serious injuries were inflicted upon the officer.

“We continue to advocate for stronger bail and sentencing to better manage repeat violent offenders like this and reduce the risk they pose to our communities,” he added.
