Peel police are asking for the public’s help after a man in his 40s was found dead after being run over by a driver in Mississauga on Wednesday morning.

Authorities believe the driver, who reported the incident, may have “run over and not struck” the man, who might have already been lying on the road at an intersection near Derry Road and Hurontario Street.

The driver has been cooperating with authorities, according to Peel Regional Police spokesperson Const. Laurie Mc Cann during a Wednesday morning press briefing. Emergency crews were first alerted about the incident around 3:45 a. m.

While the investigation is still unfolding, Mc Cann mentioned that police suspect something occurred “prior to [the pedestrian] being run over and dragged a short distance” from the intersection.

She indicated it’s possible another driver may have hit the man earlier, but investigators aren’t “100 per cent sure.”

Police are appealing to the public for more information, especially if anyone believes they hit something on the road overnight. (Paul Smith/CBC)

Drivers in that area might not have realized they hit a person because of poor weather conditions, darkness, and nearby construction work. This is why police are seeking more information from the public, said Mc Cann.

“It was dark and rainy; obviously weather may play a factor here,” she stated. “If you believe you may have struck somebody or struck something, please contact police.”

Anyone with information or video footage is encouraged to reach out to law enforcement or Crime Stoppers, according to Mc Cann.

Drivers are advised to avoid this area due to several road closures including:

Westbound lanes on Derry Road are closed at Hurontario Street. Southbound lanes on Hurontario Street at Kingsway Drive. Eastbound lanes at Derry Road and Maritz Drive. Northbound lanes on Hurontario Street are closed at Admiral Boulevard.

Mc Cann noted that police are currently informing the victim’s family.
