Province backing 25 new and enhanced clinics to increase access to publicly funded fertility treatments

THORNHILL – The Ontario government is stepping up efforts to make fertility treatments more accessible for families by investing $250 million to expand in vitro fertilization (IVF) services through the Ontario Fertility Program (OFP). This funding will support 25 clinics, including six new IVF centers, aiming to reduce wait times for fertility services in both hospital and community environments.

“This investment is about more than just money – it’s about giving families hope,” said Laura Smith, Member of Provincial Parliament for Thornhill. “By supporting IVF Canada Markham, our government is helping more Ontarians realize their dreams of starting a family. This funding will broaden access to IVF services, cut down wait times, and ensure families receive the care they need close to home.”

After a Call for Applications, IVF Canada Markham in Thornhill has been selected as part of this initiative for 2025/26 and will receive funds for providing IVF cycles.

“Our government is assisting more people in starting and expanding their families by enhancing access and reducing wait times for fertility services,” said Sylvia Jones, Deputy Premier and Minister of Health. “Our investment in these 25 clinics will help triple the number of families in Ontario benefiting from publicly funded fertility supports – further safeguarding public services.”

Of the total $250 million investment, $50 million allocated for 2025/26 is expected to fund an extra 5,000 IVF cycles across the newly established and expanded clinics. The remaining $200 million will be designated in 2026 for approved clinics during fiscal years 2026/27 and 2027/28.

“We at IVF Canada Markham are incredibly thankful to the Minister of Health and the Government of Ontario for their ongoing commitment to helping individuals and families fulfill their dreams of having children. This funding will enable us to assist more patients with timely and comprehensive fertility care. As Ontario’s longest-standing fertility center, we take pride in serving generations of families with evidence-based medicine, advanced technology, and compassionate care. This investment strengthens our shared goal – making fertility care accessible, compassionate, and effective for everyone who wishes to build a family.”

Through Your Health: A Plan for Connected and Convenient Care, the Ontario government is making consistent progress to ensure that the OFP can meet patient needs effectively while providing them with timely high-quality fertility care closer to home.

QUICK FACTS

With the OFP expansion, there are now 54 Ontario clinics offering publicly funded fertility services like intra-uterine insemination (IUI), IVF, and fertility preservation. Since launching the OFP in 2015, over 125,500 Ontarians have received funding assistance to help them grow their families. The province requires all publicly funded fertility clinics under the OFP to gain accreditation from Accreditation Canada’s Qmentum Global program by April 1, 2028. This ensures consistent quality standards throughout Ontario. The new refundable Ontario Fertility Treatment Tax Credit starts with the tax year of 2025. It builds on existing Medical Expense Tax Credits by providing further financial support aimed at couples or individuals trying to start or expand their family. The credit offers up to $5,000 annually by covering 25 percent of eligible expenses related to fertility up to $20,000. These expenses include IVF cycles; medications; travel needed for treatment; diagnostic testing; all must be provided within Canada.
