MARKHAM, ON – November 10, 2020 – The City of Markham is excited to share that Adam J. Grant has been appointed as the new Fire Chief for Markham Fire and Emergency Services, effective today, following a unanimous vote by Council. This change comes after Chief Dave Decker’s retirement.

Chief Grant has dedicated 14 years of service to the City of Markham. He started with Markham Fire and Emergency Services in 2006 and has held various positions including Fire Prevention Officer, Public Education Officer, Chief Fire Prevention Officer, and most recently served as Deputy Fire Chief and Emergency Management Coordinator. He has played a key role in leading the City’s Emergency Operations Centre during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Chief Adam Grant brings an extraordinary record of accomplishment to the role as Fire Chief with a passion for fire prevention, education and staff development,” said Mayor Frank Scarpitti. “A compassionate and determined professional, Chief Grant is as much a teacher as he is a first responder. Under Chief Grant’s leadership, we know that innovation and creativity will be at the core of his leadership. His vision for Markham Fire and Emergency Services complements the overall vision of our city: Leading through Innovation. I extend my congratulations to Chief Grant’s wife Laurel and their daughter Isla, as well as his parents, siblings and extended family.”

CAO Andy Taylor said, “It’s my pleasure to welcome and congratulate our new Fire Chief Adam Grant. Leadership and strategic thinking are two of Chief Grant’s greatest strengths. I’m very confident that Chief Grant will provide strong leadership to MFES through his vision, passion, dedication, commitment and innovation for the community, his staff, his colleagues, and Council. Congratulations Chief Grant.”
