A section of road in Markham that was meant to reopen on Saturday is still closed as of Monday due to repairs for a large sinkhole taking longer than anticipated.
Warden Avenue was closed south of Major Mackenzie Drive last Tuesday after a significant sinkhole appeared.
York Region staff informed City News that what started as a small depression grew into a large sinkhole after several nights of heavy rain.
The team initially expected to have the road repaired and open by Saturday, but as of Monday morning, Warden remains shut between 16th Avenue and Major Mackenzie.
Local traffic can access side roads within the closure, except at the location where repairs are underway, just south of Major Mackenzie.
A notice on York Region’s website does not provide an updated completion date, stating it will stay closed “until repairs are complete.”
