Wiarton Willie, Ontario’s favorite groundhog known for predicting the weather, has passed away.

The unfortunate news was shared on Tuesday by the Town of South Bruce Peninsula. This comes about three years after this version of Willie took on the community’s Groundhog Day tradition that began 70 years ago.

A statement from the town mentioned that Willie died peacefully in his sleep and that they will start looking for a successor soon.

“Willie was a curious and charismatic groundhog who delighted both residents and visitors,” it said. “Willie enjoyed basking in the summer sun, taking long winter naps and indulging in favourite foods.”

<p appointed in 2023, he was the latest in a series of groundhogs forecasting weather that have drawn thousands to the annual Wiarton Willie Festival every February.

Just last month, Willie forecasted an early spring.

Willie is one of several weather-predicting groundhogs across North America that come out from their burrows every Feb. 2. According to legend, if they see their shadows, there’ll be another six weeks of winter; no shadow means an early spring.

Danielle Edwards, manager of economic development for South Bruce Peninsula, noted that the annual Wiarton Willie Festival “is a symbol of joy for residents and visitors alike.”

“Willie brought people together in the heart of winter to celebrate a tradition that put Wiarton on the map.”

It’s Groundhog Day, and Wiarton Willie has made his prediction about whether we’re getting an early spring or not. Watch what he decides at a ceremony in Wiarton, Ont., on Feb. 2, 2026.

Edwards added that the festival is also a homecoming for families and those who grew up in Wiarton-population around 1,900-but don’t live there anymore. It’s also a significant boost to the local economy during winter months.

“It’s really special for Wiarton Willie to be known nationally and even internationally in some cases. We are very proud of Wiarton Willie and all he does for our community.”

Groundhog Day’s roots

Groundhog Day was first celebrated in the U. S. when Punxsutawney Phil made his prediction back in 1886 according to information from Punxsutawney Groundhog Club’s website.

The initial official visit to Gobbler’s Knob happened on Feb. 2,1887.

The tradition started in Wiarton back in1956 as something lighthearted. The Town of South Bruce Peninsula says it began with a “spirited individual” named Mac Mc Kenzie who wanted “to shake off the winter blues and bring some warmth to the community.”

He invited friends out for an evening together while sending out a fake news release claiming it was for Groundhog Day. The joke made its way into hands of one reporter who came into town to cover it.

“In a moment of whimsy and spontaneity when asked about where the groundhog was Mac playfully tossed a fur hat into snow,” states town’s website.

“Seizing opportunity for memorable photo, the reporter immortalized hat as stand-in for elusive groundhog.”

This history includes some controversies surrounding Willey:In1999 , ground hog found dead days before showtime. Instead funeral held but different body displayed since original had perished weeks earlier. In2003 calls arose asking caretaker fired due her covering deaths two fill-ins which would’ve taken over if current one died. Both understudies resided same den with Willy. Groundhogs territorial nature led many suspecting Willy killed roommates. In2017 , another Willy passed away leading understudy” Wee Willy ”assumed role. In2020 yet another Willy died however announcement wasn’t made until November2021. The February20121 prediction delivered by then-mayor Janice Jackson tossing hat into snow. In2022 brown ground hog chosen next Willy replaced by now-late white Willy.
