Thousands of Catholics in southwestern Ontario will soon welcome a new spiritual leader as officials announced the resignation of longtime Bishop Ronald Fabbro and the selection of his successor.
The Roman Catholic Diocese of London shared on Tuesday that Daniel Miehm has been appointed as the new Bishop after receiving his appointment from Pope Leo XIV. Miehm comes to London after serving as Bishop of the Diocese of Peterborough since 2017.
“I am humbled by the confidence the Holy Father has shown in me to take over the leadership of this very large diocese. I’ve been blessed with nine years in the Diocese of Peterborough. This is of a considerably greater scale here in London and so a greater responsibility,” said Miehm.
“I am humbled by that, and I’m excited by the challenge. I’m also very aware of the many people who are here to help me – and of the importance of collaborating in the mission of the Gospel.”
The Diocese of London covers a vast area including Middlesex, Elgin, Norfolk, Oxford, Perth, Huron, Lambton, and Essex Counties. The area’s Roman Catholic population exceeds 444,000, according to the Diocese.
Fabbro has served since 2002 and offered his resignation ahead of his 75th birthday in 2025, following canon law requirements.
Reflecting on his time in office, Fabbro noted that these past 24 years have gone by quickly and he takes pride in supporting young families during his tenure.
“As I look back on those 24 years, they were filled with joy, and there was always different challenges, but the joy of working with the people here in the diocese sustained me,” he said.
“There’s a renewed interest among young people in our church now who want to make a difference in the world and so supporting them has been one of the real highlights for me.”
Bishop Miehm will be installed on Jun. 29 at St. Peter’s Cathedral Basilica in London.
