One person is in the hospital, and a suspect remains at large after a shooting early Thursday morning in Blackfriars, located just west of London’s downtown area.

According to London police, they received a report of gunfire near Wharncliffe Road and Blackfriars Street around 3 a. m. They found an adult male with what appeared to be a gunshot wound.

The victim was taken to the hospital with injuries that are serious but not life-threatening, police stated.

“The investigation is in its early stages, and it is not known if the suspect and victim are known to one another,” police said in a statement. No description of the suspect has been released yet.

Anyone who was around at the time or may have information or relevant dashcam or surveillance footage is encouraged to contact police.

This incident adds to a recent series of shootings reported throughout the city over the last two months.

These include two shootings earlier this month: one on May 10 at a townhouse complex on Limberlost Road, and another on May 7 or 8 near Cheapside and Mc Nay streets, which damaged two homes. Fortunately, no injuries were reported and no arrests have been made.

A different shooting that occurred on May 10 at an after-hours venue on Richmond Row resulted in serious injuries for one man. Police haven’t announced any arrests related to that case yet.

In late April, authorities charged a 39-year-old man from St. Thomas with several firearm-related offenses following what was described as a targeted shooting on April 4 in the Granville Street and Barrington Avenue area. There were no injuries from that incident.

The accused was arrested after an extended standoff with OPP in Vienna and had also been wanted by London police for another shooting that took place on June 13, 2025 near Emerald and Chelton roads in southwest London.

On April 20, two individuals-a 23-year-old woman and a 25-year-old man-were charged in connection with an evening shooting at a residence on Dundas Street’s 500-block near William Street. One person suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries during that event. Two other suspects remain sought by authorities.

A targeted shooting occurred on April 4 at a motel located in the 2000-block of Dundas Street resulting in the arrest of a Scarborough man aged 41. Police indicated that this incident began as an armed robbery leading to vehicle theft and kidnapping nearby; one suspect still remains unapprehended.

“Violent offences involving firearms represent a serious threat to public safety. The London Police Service works closely with our policing partners to disrupt criminal activity through proactive enforcement,” police said in a statement Thursday.

“We respond promptly to violent incidents and work diligently to ensure those responsible are held accountable so all who live, work, or visit our city can feel safe.”
