Authorities in London, Ontario are looking into a spike in overdose cases after numerous incidents were reported over just one day in the downtown area.
As stated by the London police, emergency responders handled 39 calls related to overdoses from 8:00 AM on Wednesday until 8:00 AM on Thursday. Several people needed medical attention.
Investigators suspect that a “toxic supply of illegal substances” might be spreading throughout the community.
The rise in overdose cases was initially noted shortly after 11:15 AM on Wednesday when officers dealt with multiple non-fatal overdoses in the downtown sector.
Police later discovered that a person had allegedly driven through the area and handed out a free substance to several individuals before departing.
Officials report that some of those who consumed this substance then overdosed and required medical help.
This case has now been assigned to the criminal investigation division of the London Police Service. Officers are working on identifying the substance and finding out who may be responsible.
